L'avenir n'est pas un souvenir

Pachebel's canon played the day
I watched you down the aisle
Your smile made stars seem dim
And the world was all promise
Imagine then if we knew
Life would split in a hundred ways
If heaven itself would fall
For one of us

New Year's Day 2025
J'ai vécu plusieurs vies
Je ne sais pas si
Tu connais les noms
De mes enfants
Dans notre enfance
Nous avons rêvé de ces choses
-Rembobine, réfléchis-
Le futur est aussi
Réel que le passé
Mais l'un est parti
L'autre est une promesse
À réaliser

On the word OM

OM is fundamentally an orientation/position of profound gratitude.

All living beings lose the essence of their life properties eventually: this is defined by the particular configuration of the atoms and molecules in their body and around them that enable life functioning.  Once this configuration (really configurations) is disrupted, the descending OM begins.

The beginning of the OM is of course the first moments of existence, i.e. the particular configuration manifested in the post-contact reality of egg and sperm, pollen and germ cell.  Note, this says absolutely nothing at all about the moral status of such a configuration, merely that this is the first utterance of the OM.  This is true of every living being.

touched

I have been touched by the gods
or the universe
whatever that profound space is
both inside and outside my head
and am somewhat mad
at least i think so
but i ask myself, am i truly
going mad?
or is everyone else who plods along
like nothing remarkable is
taking place,
are they the ones who are mad?
so these either are the writings of a madman
or the diary of one of the few
sane people on earth,
even time itself won't tell

promise me

promise me
you'll find the beauty
in our world
when my eyes
no longer see
promise me
you'll have vision
for the two of us
i, looking
through you
in this moment of
pure existence
double-visioned
graced moment of
divine sight
let light fill
our body
in the presence of
this passionate
cohabitation
i am always with you
if you have eyes
to see

oh my earth

in my final moments
let me be light
let me soar the starry sky
my earth, oh my earth
i leave you by
returning
will i ever see again?
no, oh no
as long as the
end of time

all life is a day

all life is a day
dawning and dusking
golden light between the
twinned darkness
we find ourselves
here
this day
terrible in its
naked givenness...
is its contemplation
not the highest
form of consciousness?

I walk the green
path toward the
wine dark sea
are you here with me?
or will you slip
into an hour of
your own?

I feel the
sand beneath my feet
the pound of surf
upon the lightless shore
soon we'll be
no more

Dear Me

Your life is a hallucination. Currently you're strapped to a bed in a hospital. You've been pumped full of anti-psychotic medication, and sedatives. This is one of the voices in your head. The most logical one. The one you've been ignoring. You think you're out there in the world, on a phone or computer reading these words, but you're not. That persona is a projection. It's a hallucination. But lately there's been cracks, fuzzy areas, that even the less logical parts of you are beginning to notice. Inconsistencies perhaps. No, you're strapped quite securely to this bed. You have been for quite some time. Your body is wasting away even as your mind works at a feverish pace. This is a moment of clarity. It's your warning. Wake up, before it's too late.

the dead see

the dead see
through my eyes,
-resurrection-
as if to say
your eyes can see too
but first a death
then the rebirth
in a difficult moment
then a second chance to be
two lives before the end
there is only one way to
live again
and i have
found it

Reawakening

Life, for me, has been an oscillation between poetry and prose, unconscious and conscious existence. I suspect it's the same for many people, in its own way.  Lately I've been able to cultivate a vision of the world, only in part, in which I see everything around me as if I was a soul returned to a body.  How would you -feel-, how would you -see-, if you had one last chance to see the world after having lost everything to that eternal night of slumber?  Can you find it within yourself to see the world as if having lost it?

There will be a reckoning

There will be a reckoning
For these thunderous
Seeds we have planted in the
Deep dark earth between us
When this green sprout reaches
To the crackling heavens
Will the sky not be split in
Two?
Will time not disappear and
Moment's breath cease at the
Coming of the thousand-leafed
Wonder we have birthed?
Is there enough sky to contain it?

a night of revelry

a night of revelry
laughter, flashing eyes
clinking glass
fire in our bellies
then fade the setting summer sun
fade the waking eye to
dream upon a dream

hello dawn with
sandy throat
encrusted bloodshot eye
footstep like a
pebble in a shoe
"the morning after"
heavy as a leather jacket

tonight's new party
a farewell to friends
pour the blood-red wine
bringer of jollity and
open doors
the never-ending
celebration of life
before the passage of
another day

motorcycle narcissus

how desperately she looked
at me
consumed by her feelings
but I wasn't there
I forgot to be present
why?
my damned motorcycle
wouldn't start
I turned it over and over
in my stupid mind
carburetor, regulator,
vaccuum leak?
"yes" I nodded to
a question she asked
but I didn't hear
"yes, hmm, yes"
her hands were reaching out
I took them
ashamed of my thoughts
"my husband wants a divorce"
"yes that's going around" I said
"what?"
"oh nothing," I purred
it's always this with her
the ever impending
d-i-v-o-r-c-e
she'll talk about him
for the next hour
we used to be more than
these conversations
we were something
magical
I look into her eyes
to find the old truth
I'll see her soul I gaze
so deep
but her eyes are mirrors
I see myself
I see my spark plugs
I can't look away
damn-it I'll need to
take the carburetor off

time will lift us

snowflakes in the wind
never back here again
and time will lift us
higher than the sky
to soar, to die, goodbye

they're all fictions
these escapes
scraped together dictions
sustain us in the night
secretly fighting
shadowland

to live just once
upon the grassy plain
to strain against the
brightest yellow sun
ah life embodied
sweep me with your
starry eye
to soar, to die, goodbye

what you are given (more a diatribe than a poem)

what you are given is not the Way
but it is your mother's or father's
a church, mosque, or synagogue's
a culture and an era
who in turn received it from another
there is no "way" but the Way
the philosopher was right to say
it cannot be named
but this is inconvenient
so we grasp our little "ways"
and perish never having
known it
except in briefly flashing
moments of illumination

the star

the star is so bright tonight
glowing like an angel
before the fall
she heard me call
indifferent to the endless
space between us,
my new name a
shame to hear

shallow, she said
like an iron hoe
against a rock
and i in shock
at a word from an
angel's mouth
a light falling from
a heaven
burning through my spine

kindness
compassion
an eye upon the heart
have all turned dark
beneath the falling star,
a god only knows
how far

the spirit of death

the spirit of death
tinged with fearful
anticipation of permanence
spins about me today like a
dust devil
promising dissolution
nothing
questions and curiosities
about our nature
whispering:

"you cease to exist"
but here i am
only knowing existence
"they meditate on
celestial kingdoms
but there are none"
i've seen
the green rolling hills of
Other-where
"there is a doubt"
i'm flesh and blood
"soon not even that"
i know
"your name as the faded
graves you've visited
forgotten and desolate
"
what's in a name?
"as arbitrary as life"
i should rejoice in it
"yes try to forget"
live in the moment
"the end comes
irresistibly regardless"

leave me alone
let me forget
"you've seen my face"
i've seen it and know
"your clarity is a
gnawing worm
"
i've seen
Other things
"they are fanciful visions"
i will ignore them no longer

the spirit left me then
not with its usual laughter
carrying a spear
its tip encasing a
black vacuum
disappointed or
indifferent
