promise me

promise me I'm more than the ghost

of your desiring heart,

your true love

in all the worlds we've ever lived,

the gaze of an inner eye

transfixed upon the shape of

my existence,

then life would not be lived in

strained vanity,

a dust mote in beams of

splendid light

without shadow or gravity,

is such love possible

beyond ideas and

good intentions?

when we were close

when we were close
i took those golden moments
for granted,
when the sight of your face was
sunshine warming mine,
and now at the end of an age
you drift,
a whispering specter haunting
everything.
like Odysseus i'd offer blood
to bring you back.
where have you gone?
can i trace this filament back to the
exact moment you became
a ghost?
would i find my own fault there?
oh to turn the hands of time

absence

the genie won't go back

in the bottle,

how tight the throttled

vapors as they escape

the chambered waiting,

i will grant you all your wishes,

all your papered wishes,

and dissolve to nothing

before your distracted

presence.

we will fall victim to your

self-actualization,

memorialized by a

mile high black obelisk

with the words

“ABSENCE”

carved into its cold surface,

reflecting no light,

invisible in the coming

night.

little bird

oh time you slip away
and i can't catch my breath
as i press against this autumn chill

when the lonely bird
finds its evening tree
and the night wind sways the
branch it calls home
she blinks the stars above
from her tear-filled eyes
and like shooting stars
they fall to the ground below
she will pass unnoticed
she will pass unnoticed
like a dry leaf blown from its
withered twig

my steps beneath the
cold dark trees
a collar to the coming
winter's wind
a movement catches my eye:
a small feather swirls around
the frosty ground and passes
into the night

I promised

I promised in the last life
I'd find her in the next
An age went by
And cities fell
While worlds were turned to ash
Before she came and grew
And I was born and knew
The person standing there
was you

Every death creates a veil
Obscuring reborn sight
Until the sacred moment
(often late into the night)
The inner eye is opened
And you see things as they are
How bright you've shone
To reach this eye,
How far…

mirror

you are mirrored
neuroses
of each other,
and it's love
the bliss of love,
the intensity of it a
cosmic rip in
spacetime

when will destiny be
fulfilled
and the sighing days
cease to
exist

if i waited

this whole life i've waited
for the jewel of my soul,
and she is it and doesn't know,
and another thinks she is,
and another grows very curious,
another lends her ear,
and another married a cruel, stupid man,
still another wants to run away

my life and reason with a smile that
could break the blazing sky,
where in the world do you
keep your quiet home?
will i be a gray and tired man
before the day?

when the weather grew cold

when the weather grew cold
she came to me
trailing freshly
fallen leaves
crisp from morning frost
with hot tea and
warm bread
the sunlight golden on her
wind-blown head
her eyes all bright with
new welcome and
desire
I clung to her like moss
on a stone
inseparably grown with
ages of time
"you'll always be mine"
she whispered
and the trees bowed
in solemn witness
to her words
and my heart bent
with those ancient woods
toward her

this time of year

this time of year
is you to me,
even absence is in the
cool autumn air,
in fading light and the
fading flowers of the
forest glades
tired crickets give their
final performance
before cold solidifies the
grass and earth,
i wear a sweater that
reminds me of you,
i swear your scent is
on its threads
in the place you
rested your head
when i kissed it,
when i gave my heart
to a friend

gifted

you are a gift,
and in my deep gratitude
there is longing:
when will my blue eyes
reflect your face?
when will your touch
speak of the warmest presence?
how old we have become
upon the thin green plane,
rarer than any jewel
desired by blurry-eyed men,
it is the inevitability of it
all,
and our faded memory of
a truth known our first-breath's
moment.
our default: complacency,
but has our love
ever been satisfied?
i burn with Being's immanence
like the newborn star,
terrible, but the
giver of a
beautiful intensity.

Reawakening

Life, for me, has been an oscillation between poetry and prose, unconscious and conscious existence. I suspect it's the same for many people, in its own way.  Lately I've been able to cultivate a vision of the world, only in part, in which I see everything around me as if I was a soul returned to a body.  How would you -feel-, how would you -see-, if you had one last chance to see the world after having lost everything to that eternal night of slumber?  Can you find it within yourself to see the world as if having lost it?

night would turn to day

night would turn to day
if you stayed
with me beside the sea
or here upon this hill
until the rosy dawn
and all the sparkles
on the distant waves
would witness what
we gave each other
oh tale for some
far time
pure and diamond set
on the finger of a dream
gleaming in my eye
of ocean blue
a radiant yearning beam

a moment to share (lament)

a moment to share the
dazzling beauty of earth
traces of the sublime in
your eyes
please just a moment from
busy days and lists of tasks
eternity in some time
together
it's too much to ask on
days like these
days i walk through trees and
flowering fields
while the promise of summer
storms pushes wind through my
long hair and around
blue eyes
scent of wildflowers in
nostrils hungry for something
real and fresh
why are we at such odds?
has complacency replaced the
ever-present moment?
will you chase a list into the
grave?
time will see us out the
flashing frame of life
but can it be together?

when the moment

when the moment
lives beyond itself
we vibrate at the
frequency of eternity
infinite in presence,
essence, spirit
one with each other's
shining faces
such graces only
angels know
who glow in
heaven's light
and we share that
when the moment
lives beyond itself
when we pause and see
the other's beauty
written in the
rising time and
read within two hearts
the focal point of
everything

time will tell

time will tell
a many-chaptered story
in which characters
fade in and out
flash like fiery sparks
on a dark summer night
and those with sight will
see
but me?
oh turner of pages
rememberer of tales
i grow old
with whitened hair
wrapped against the cold
snow beating hard my
thin glass illumined by
a meagre flame
twice wrapped against
a childhood shame
whispering not
divine names to
warm an aching heart
i have my own chapters
so old..
they can't be told

The Convent

Will you help me find my light
Lost with a dying friend
Because tonight I felt a familiar
Spark burn in my heart again.

There beneath the yellow oak
And up by the convent wall
We gazed down the Sister's path
Until night began to fall

how heavy

how heavy the day
a space away
ribbon pressed between
the printed word
heard by angels in the
wooden rafters
i call out across
the creaky pew
my words too few and
softer than the barking dog
to fall upon your perfect ear
fear, fear, fear, love
the promises of mud
but you are rapt
angelic vision to my
aching view
how far away
i die
all God’s beauty in your
shining eye

dark night

dark night
beneath the
glowing lights
we shared our breath
along the quiet street
too soon for promises
footsteps apart and
side by side
your stride was strong
and your eyes flashed
but how gentle
your voice
how cool the breeze
where we sat upon
the park bench
covered by the dark night
lips hidden from
the light
parted by the space

Closer to your heart

Closer to your heart
A new start
Mingled with epiphany
Can we rise to
The new era
Pledged by my hand
Upon your breast
Sealed with our
Rising eyes?
So quickly space expands
But memory marks
The promise given
In its fullness,
To trust, hope, love
To make more promises,
Take risks, remember

I cross my heart

a cloudy cup of chicory

a cloudy cup of chicory
keeps the cold away
as the wind howls against
my creaking house today
~thoughts wandering thoughts~
come with me
to a greener space
where the sun is warm
upon your gleaming face
we've been there before
before the cold and distance
i want more of you
more than this instance
can provide for
there upon the green
green shore
burning bright as candle flame
behind the stormy door
